惜字亭

Word-treasuring Pavilion

In traditional Chinese society, people believe that Chinese characters are sacred and sublime. Text on papers cannot be carelessly damaged. Even wastepaper must be burnt in word-respecting pavilions as long as there were words on it. However, today, words are no longer viewed with such high regard and may simply be considered the physical representation of ideas. Nevertheless, do you know that Hanzi Characters are that designers have to work hard to create day by day? These precise creations highlight the value of literary form design and why words are to be revered. The Word-treasuring Pavilion, takes visitors on a journey to explore where words came from and how they were born.

justfont is a new-generation word design, promotion, and education team dedicated to nurturing Taiwan’s next generation of designers. Starting from fundamental education, justfont endeavors to enhance Taiwan’s aesthetic and literary environments.

Founded in 2010, justfont later introduced “web font” application; in 2012, it established font knowledge platforms comprising justfont blog and lovefonts (a Facebook page); in 2014, it launched a font course featuring two classes (i.e., “Understanding Fonts” and “Creating Fonts”) for interested students. Concurrently, it launched Font Walk, the first-ever popular book on Chinese fonts that is currently one of the best-selling design books in Taiwan. In 2015, it unveiled “jf 金萱” (pronounced “jf jinxuan”), giving birth to the first Chinese character font created through crowdfunding (a total of more than NT$25 million was raised and the number of sponsors exceeded 9,000).

The journey to change the landscape of Chinese characters will continue to move forward because of justfont’s love for them. However, justfont’s focus is not only to design fonts, but also to share interesting stories behind them with the public. Chinese characters are more than just a tool for transmitting information; they are also visual images. justfont believes that it is not only creating Chinese characters, but also designing “Chinese character landscapes.” Good intentions will inevitably create favorable finished products. Visitors who wish to contribute to the beauty of Chinese characters are invited to join justfont and learn about the beauty of the Chinese character fonts.
